babism : religious movement that flourished in Persia between 1844 and 1952. It was an outgrowth of Shiism that advocates egalitarianism, forbids polygamy and trading of slaves. Its founder was 'Ali Muhammad of Shiraz (1817-1850), who took the title Báb --meaning "Gate"--from a well-known Shi'i theological term.
